The first Baker Street Challenge took place last week as Muscatt Black Graf battled it out with local rivals Streathers LLP in a series of activities to raise money for charity.
Swords were drawn last Wednesday evening (16 October) on the corner of Broadstone Place and Dorset Street in London’s West End as the two firms went head-to-head in the legal world’s equivalent of the modern pentathlon.
Rumours swirled ahead of the meet that the quintet of events had been chosen as a precursor to their inclusion at Los Angeles 2028 and competitors were forced to draw on strength and agility of Olympic proportions to successfully navigate the challenges.
Both sides fielded strong teams. Lining up for Muscatt Black Graf were: Ian ‘The Boss’ Pringle, Yvonne ‘Almighty’ Addy, Paul ‘Don’t Mess With’ McKee, Rommel ‘Grrrr’ Guevarra, Matthew ‘Cool as a Cucumber’ Cottis, Mark ‘Powers’ Austin, Bradley ‘Frankie’ Fraser-Brett, Evelyn ‘The Nuke’ Nute, Lucinda ‘Safe Hands’ Seiger, and Vinisha ‘The Teacher’ Martin.
The day got off to a strong start, and it initially looked like the home team’s months of practice had paid off, as Muscatt Back Graf surged into an early lead after the first event: a short clue hunt along Broadstone Place.
However, event two (Brompton relay challenge: time trial format) saw Streathers come right back into it, and it was all square going into the much-anticipated third event: the egg and spoon race – complete with squats and lunges – to really separate the wheat from the chaff.
Thighs duly burning, it was then time for both teams to decamp to the Muscatt Black Graf offices at 100 Baker Street to take on the day’s final events.
First up was the chubby bunny challenge (whoever could say chubby bunny with the most marshmallows in their mouth) followed by the nail-biting finale: foosball.
A late successful surge by Streathers saw the firm claw back the Muscatt Black Graf lead and after five events the two teams were unable to be separated. The first Baker Street Challenge ended with honours even.
Thirsts were then quenched, and appetites sated, as members of both teams put their rivalries aside to enjoy drinks and pizzas.
As a result of the event ending in a tie, both firms pledged to donate to the host team’s nominated charity St Raphael’s Hospice (straphaels.org.uk).
Sue Garnish, HR Manager at Streathers, said: “I just wanted to say a huge thank you for hosting the inaugural Baker Street Challenge.
“We thoroughly enjoyed the games especially the Brompton relay … Tour de Baker Street here we come!”
Yvonne Addy, Head of Dispute Resolution at Muscatt Black Graf, commented: “The event was great fun and so much better than working on a Wednesday evening!
“We would like to thank all of the Streathers’ participants for their infectious enthusiasm and impressive egg and spoon squats and lunges.
“We are already looking forward to the next challenge!”
